Course Introduction

Introduction

Our Chinese Language Center offers accredited language courses for AU international students. These courses are designed based on three levels of Chinese language courses: Basic Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, and High-Intermediate Chinese. The courses are compatible with ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Our courses are primarily designed to help students develop their competence to converse fluently in Chinese, to study academic courses, and to acquaint themselves with Taiwanese/Chinese culture and society. Our course design is based on a one-and-half-year program, during which students progress through A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 stages in five levels. The courses are mostly conducted in a small class, enhancing thereby the interaction between both teachers and students. In addition to classroom teaching and learning, extra-curricular activities, such as speech contest, poetry reading, song contests and other forms of performance are held to enable students to apply what they have learned in class to real-life contexts.

Curriculum Mapping

 Basic Chinese

Basic Chinese is designed for international students with zero or very limited Mandarin Chinese ability. We offer courses in Mandarin Chinese and Chinese cultural understanding. Courses in this program include Beginner Chinese  (I, II), Basic Chinese(I), Basic Chinese Grammar, Basic Chinese Reading & Writing and Introduction of Taiwanese/ Chinese Culture(I). After completing this program, students will be able to recognize basic Chinese grammar, Chinese pronunciation, Chinese characters, and to converse in simple Chinese within daily life context.

 Intermediate Chinese

Intermediate Chinese is designed for international students who have studied Mandarin Chinese for more than 200 hours. Courses in this program include  High-Intermediate Chinese Conversation and Listening (I, II), Intermediate Chinese Grammar, Practice of Chinese Oral Expression through Information Technology and High-Intermediate Chinese Reading and Writing After completing this program, students will be able to listen, speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese to meet their daily language needs.

 Intermediate-Advanced Chinese

Intermediate-Advanced Chinese is designed for international students who have studied Mandarin Chinese for more than 350 hours. Courses in this program include Advanced Chinese Conversation and Listening (I, II), Current Affairs in Chinese, Chinese for Specific Purposes, Introduction of Taiwanese / Chinese Culture (II), and Chinese for Academic Purposes. After completing this program, students will be able to converse and respond in some depth to daily and academic topics. They will also be able to read their academic texts and to write basic Chinese.
